1. Macro Pulse
Tuesday’s close: chips up, breadth down. The S&P 500 rose 0.36% to 7,568.92, ending a three-day losing streak. The Nasdaq 100 rose 0.68% and the SOX 2.63%; the Dow fell 0.38% to 51,786.72 as Apple dropped 1.90%. [CappNotes, 11/03; StockTitan, 11/03]
Breadth. The equal-weight S&P 500 fell 0.33%, trailing the cap-weighted index by about seven-tenths of a point. Decliners beat gainers 941 to 551. Technology rose 1.31%; staples fell 2.07% and materials 2.01%. [CappNotes, 11/03]
The overnight swing. Futures fell 1% to 2.5% on early returns, then reversed. At 6:02 AM S&P 500 futures were up 1.1%. At 8:45 AM Dow futures were up 1,083 points, or 2.1%, and S&P 500 futures 1.1%; the Russell 2000 was up about 1.8%. Worries eased after Trump said he would accept the results and expects to work with Democrats. [Investing.com, 11/04; CNBC via StockTitan, 11/04; Yahoo Finance, 11/04]
The result. Democrats won both chambers, flipping Senate seats in Texas, Iowa, Kansas, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina. In Texas, Gina Hinojosa unseated Governor Greg Abbott; she has pledged a data-center moratorium. Texas holds over 25% of planned US capacity by 2030. [Variety, 11/04; Yahoo Finance, 11/04]
[ANALYSIS] The tape reads gridlock as a fiscal brake: less new borrowing, a softer dollar, cheaper bonds for the many. The new Congress sits in January, and the president keeps his veto. The policy risk is concentrated in data centers.
Bonds. Tuesday the 10-year rose 4bp to 4.95% after JOLTS hit a four-month high of 7.523M. This morning it is near 4.92%; five-year yields fell as much as 9bp to 4.67%. The 30-year is near 5.30%. [CappNotes, 11/03; Bloomberg, 11/04; Investing.com, 11/04]
Oil: third straight decline. Brent settled Tuesday at $103.60, down 1.12%; WTI at $96.09. This morning Brent is down 0.75% near $102.82 and WTI near $95.83, after Trump signaled no immediate new strikes on Iran. [CappNotes, 11/03; TipRanks, 11/04; Coinpaper, 11/04]
Iran. Qatar is mediating and both sides are reviewing new proposals; Iran’s national security chief called the US response “not satisfactory.” API reported a 5.27M-barrel crude draw. [Bloomberg, 11/04; 5paisa, 11/04]
Overseas. The Nikkei fell as much as 4.8% as Advantest, Tokyo Electron and SoftBank were sold on data-center rules; it closed down about 1.4% to 1.8%. Kospi fell about 3%. China rallied: Hang Seng +1.67%, Shanghai +2.16%. Europe is higher: the Stoxx 600 is up about 0.4%, Novo Nordisk about 6%. | Treasury quarterly refunding | 8:30 AM (out) | $125B: $58B 3-year, $42B 10-year, $25B 30-year, sizes unchanged and expected to hold for several quarters. No new supply shock for the long end. |
| S&P Global services PMI (Oct final) | 9:45 AM | Prior 57.9. Second-tier; a revision matters only if it moves far from the flash. |
| ISM services (Oct) | 10:00 AM | Consensus 54.7 to 54.8, prior 54.9; prices paid prior 74.0, consensus about 75. Hot prices firm a December hike; employment near 50 is the growth read. |

4. Pre-Market Movers: Upside
5. Pre-Market Movers: Downside
6. Sector Rotation Radar
STRONG: Small Caps, Gold and Policy Winners
Russell 2000 futures are up about 1.8%, Dow futures about 2.2%; gold is up about 2.9%, and solar names 6% to 8.6%. Durability: the gold and bond bid rests on gridlock, which lasts two years; the solar bid rests on bills that cannot pass before 2027. [Yahoo Finance, 11/04; CNBC, 11/04; Investing.com, 11/04]
WEAK: AI Builders and the Musk Complex
CoreWeave, Iren, Nebius, Tesla and SpaceX are down about 5% to 7%; the Nikkei’s AI names fell up to 13%. Durability: moderate to high. Permitting is set at state level, and Texas, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Ohio now have Democratic governors. [CNBC, 11/04; investingLive, 11/04]
[ANALYSIS] Tuesday the equal-weight index lost to the Nasdaq 100 by more than a point. This morning futures reverse that: Dow and Russell lead, Nasdaq lags. The close decides whether the rotation is a vote reaction or a second leg.
7. Today’s Session Playbook
- Data: ISM services at 10:00 AM. Consensus 54.7 to 54.8; watch prices paid near 75. A hot print with ADP at +86,000 firms the roughly 78% December hike odds and tests the bond rally.
- Top story: permission vs demand. AMD, Arista and Super Micro beat and guided up; CoreWeave, Tesla and SpaceX fall. Watch whether AMD holds its gain into the close.
- S&P 500 levels: Tuesday closed at 7,568.92; futures imply an open near 7,650. Resistance is about 7,650, Monday’s morning high, then 7,676.77, the October 26 close. Support is 7,580.07, then 7,541.40.
- Event risk: Qualcomm and Arm after the close. Two more chip guides. If they guide up and still fade, permission risk is taxing the whole chain.
- Under-the-radar: the five-year note. It fell as much as 9bp to 4.67%, more than the 10-year. The belly is pricing fiscal restraint; watch whether it holds through ISM.
Tuesday our research set the test: AMD had to show forward demand, not just a beat, and the equal-weight index had to beat the Nasdaq 100 again with Brent under $110. AMD passed: a 2027 growth call above 80% and a $17B quarter guide. Brent settled at $103.60. The equal-weight leg failed: it fell 0.33% while the Nasdaq 100 rose 0.68%.
Our Tuesday calls: Palantir, Wait for Clarity, closed down 1.65% after trading down 7% to 8%; waiting avoided the low. Apple, Wait for Clarity, fell 1.90%, half its pre-market loss. Pfizer, Wait for Open, fell 2.18%; right. Lattice, Momentum Play, rose 10.98%; right. Revvity, Opportunity, rose 7.84%; right. Aehr, Momentum Play, rose 26.50%; right. The chips, Wait for Open, held this time: AMD +3.65%, Nvidia +2.29%, Micron +2.58%; waiting cost upside. Shopify, Wait for Clarity, closed down 8.74%, half its pre-market loss. Dynatrace, Gartner and Zebra, Wait for Clarity, fell further, 14.69%, 13.19% and 8.76%; right. The S&P closed at 7,568.92, between our support and resistance. [CappNotes, 11/03; StockTitan, 11/03]
The hypothesis now: the forward clause we added Tuesday held on both sides. AMD, Arista, Super Micro and Duolingo guided up and are paid; Datadog, Amdocs and Skyworks guided flat or down and are sold. To the capex, revenue, credit, cycle, equity and cash audits we have tracked since October, the vote adds one more: permission. Chip sellers are paid on demand; data-center builders are charged for where they can build. Gridlock is a bond and gold bid, not an AI bid. The test today: AMD already gave back its early gain. If it recovers while CoreWeave stays down, the split is real; if both fade, the vote is taxing the whole chain. Investors, and we, should not confuse a lower 10-year with permission to buy every AI name.
